Hot Tips for a Cooler Planet
  • Buy appliances with the Energy Star label, which guarantees that they're energy-efficient. You may need to plunk down some bucks to purchase new but once you plug them in, they’ll instantly save money through lower electric bills.
  • Replace your incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescents, which use a third to a quarter of the electricity and last ten times as long, saving you money and trips to the hardware store.
  • Turn lights out. Turn the lights out when you leave a room. The more electricity used, the more fossil fuel is burned to make power.
  • Weatherize your home. Seal drafts. Improve insulation. Install energy-efficient windows and plant landscaping that keeps your house cool in the summer and warmer in the winter.
  • Buy a fuel-efficient vehicle. Hybrid vehicles combine a gas engine and electric motor to give you incredible fuel economy and fewer emissions coming out of your tailpipe.
  • Use human powered transportation. Bike, walk, scooter, rollerblade or ride a unicycle to your destination. You not only get where you’re going but you get a workout too.
  • Keep your tires inflated to the proper psi. Carry a tire gauge and monthly check the pressure in your tires. Tires that are not filled properly will burn up more fuel creating more emissions to go the same distance.
  • Talk your boss into letting you telecommute.  Working from home burns less gas, decreases traffic congestion and gives you more family time.
